Burlington-based singer/songwriter Annie Marleau has exceptional discipline and talent for setting goals and reaching them. Her foundation was established through her experience to graduate from the National Ballet School of Canada.
Annie is a singer/songwriter with powerful melodies and catchy hooks that linger in your mind long after you've heard them. Her distinctive vocals are versatile enough to cut through a pounding guitar riff or float over a quiet ballad. Since the release of her debut CD “Alive” in 2006, Annie has been receiving much attention for her music. Her list of credits include radio airplay across Canada for her single “Run” on both AC and Country stations. Also, a 4-week run at #1 on the Independent Artists Company (IAC) music chart for her single “Addicted”. On Annie ’s latest release, the EP "Heart and Soul", she has found her true sound, a rich country-pop with tinges of blues and rock. Inspired by such artists as Dixie Chicks, Sheryl Crow and The Eagles, the five songs range from the upbeat “I Need Your Love,” “Something’s Gotta Give,” “I Don’t Know Why,” and “Addicted” to the gentler “Modern Day Romeo.” The tracks were produced by Carl Jennings at Westmoreland Recording Studio in Hamilton, ON. “Carl is very passionate about my music, extremely talented and gets exactly who I am.” For this follow-up EP, Annie wrote “Modern Day Romeo”, a song dedicated to her husband . “I actually wasn’t going to record it,” she admits. “It’s difficult to write about someone or something that’s really close to me.” The song was nominated for a 2008 Ontario Independent Music Award in the country category. The bluesy “Something’s Gotta Give,” which has a bit of a swagger, was the second track she recorded for the new project. “It was written in a time where financially things were a little bit tight,” she says. “I just thought something’s gotta give, and took the idea from there.” Sharing a similar harmony-laden vibe are “I Need Your Love” and “I Don’t Know Why” about love, lost and found. The last song Annie added to the EP is a new version of “Addicted” from Alive, a lyric about being addicted to another person, which has been popular with audiences. In a live setting, it has taken on a more country-rock feel. “The first version had an alternative sound to it; the new version we went for a kickin’ country feel that’ll make you want to dance.” The "Heart and Soul" EP, is expected to be released in early 2009. | |
