Ben Veneer

Ben Veneer has been changing his name since a nurse nicknamed him in the hospital 35 years ago.

A former member of the band Qr5, he left the Toronto music scene in 2008 and became the caretaker of a Quaker meeting house in Toronto's annex, where the austere solitude proved fertile ground for his current album of nine songs. His deep voice, poetic lyrics and unique delivery have caught the attention of Toronto's songwriting community.

like a cross between Leonard Cohen and Gordon Lightfoot - Anhai

(His songs are) far beyond what you usually hear anywhere - Sam Larkin

After a few months of playing solo, Ben was invited by Toronto indy legend Bob Wiseman to play a cd release party along with Great Lake Swimmers, Ron Sexsmith, $100 and Final Fantasy.

Ben Veneer’s music is at once plain and mysterious. Son of a church organist, Ben sings of love and religion, solitude and hope on his self-titled solo debut.

How blessed are the ears
That you will never hear.
I want to hear somebody sing.
But there’s no need to fear,
I believe I’m not alone.
I don’t need to know everything.
